The Gymnasium, the first ruin we encounter, is where runners trained


The Palaestra was a large covered perimeter with an open courtyard where wrestlers trained


 



These columns support the roof that provided shade for the athletes

The columns are fluted out their outward facing side but smooth on the inward facing side to make it comfortable for the athletes to lean against them
